Asbestos is a mineral that naturally occurs and was largely used prior to the 1980's.  It is present in literally thousands of products and in many, many application.   It was common place in construction, ship yard, pipe working, and ultimately in many of the products and surfaces that we currently have in our homes.  Some of the reasons it was initially used was due to it's ability to add strength whatever application it was applied to.  It is also a fire proof and was therefore used in many places/products that might need added fire protection.  It wasn't until years after it being used regularly that it was discovered the horrible, adverse health effects being caused from exposure to this mineral.  It has been connected to multiple kinds of cancers and other health problems.  In the restoration industry we are constantly dealing with ever-changing regulations, whether from the EPA, Division of Air Quality, or OSHA.  In order to protect not only our customers but also our employees we have to comply with department regulations as they come by testing for asbestos when appropriate and having it properly abated by trained asbestos workers if it is found to be present in any homes we are working in.  As a restoration company we are continually reviewing changes in the asbestos industry but most Americans are not fully versed in the hazards of improperly dealing with asbestos.  When water or fire damage causes someone to make an insurance claim it is highly recommended that they discuss any concerns of asbestos with their contractor and/or adjuster to help inform them of any possible areas to have concern.
